Tips for Your Life Insurance Exam
Underwriting for your life insurance
policy is done on the basis of your medical history, as well as on the
results of your medical exam (aka paramedical exam)...so relax a much as
possible and utilize these tips:
- It is better not to eat or drink
(except water) for 8-12 hours prior to the examination and
take little or no caffeine. Schedule a morning examination,
when you are more likely to be relaxed.
- One key factor is a good night's
rest before the exam.
- If possible, give a urine specimen
before a blood pressure check, since the elimination of
fluids tends to moderately lower blood pressure.
- If you are a smoker, we suggest
that you do not smoke at all within 30-60 minutes of the
exam. Smoking tends to elevate blood pressure by
constricting the artery walls.
- Salt retains fluids. Avoid salt or
use it very lightly for 3 or 4 days prior to the
examination. This can have a beneficial affect on your blood
pressure.
-
Please
have the following information available for the examiner:
- Names, addresses and phone numbers for all physicians or
clinics you have visited for routine check-ups or treatment.
- Names of all prescribed medication used, including dosage
and frequency.
- You should discuss any potential
problems with your agent/advisor prior to the examination.
This can affect which companies you apply to. Also, your
advisor/agent may wish to discuss your case or write a
letter to the underwriter to clearly describe your specific
situation. This can be beneficial.
- For the EKG (electrocardiogram)
test, which is a graph of the electrical activity of the
heart; be relaxed and comfortable prior to the EKG test. Do
not use coffee or other stimulants. If you are aware of EKG
changes that have been noted and evaluated in the past, then
it is most helpful to bring those to the examiner's
attention as well as to your advisor/agent. Some people have
and abnormal looking EKG, but it is normal for them.
- Your weight and height ratio is an
important component of your health rating and the eventual
rate your will pay. Maintaining a healthy weight prior to
the exam can be beneficial.
